Take a tour of Finca de Arrieta, our Eco Retreat on You Tube, please note this was filmed "winter" 2009/2010. Guest Home Movies ideal for an insider’s guide to visiting Lanzarote

Finca de Arrieta

Most of our eco properties – the Eco Yurts, Eco Garden Cottage, Eco Barn, Eco Tower and Eco Luxury Villa – are situated on the beautiful 30,000-metre estate, Finca de Arrieta, which is also the site of our family home. Originally farming land, it has been lovingly transformed into a rural idyll, featuring mature exotic gardens, including mango, banana, guava and lime trees,  animal enclosures and a play area – all partly walled in stone found on the finca. For more information on yurts, visit our What is a yurt? page.

Guests have shared use of a solar-heated 10-metre lap pool and plunge pool, as well as a chill-out area with shaded Polynesian-style daybed – all in a gated mature garden setting with sea and mountain views. Here you’ll also find a spacious covered open room with hardwood floor for guests’ use. There is a large, fully equipped kitchen, dining space for eight, authentic Moroccan floor seating, WIFI access and a further toilet and shower room. It’s the perfect place to relax, read or enjoy a meal.

For convenience there is an onsite honesty shop in the room underneath the Eco Tower. The shop offers goods such as, Milk, Pasta, Charcoal, Washing Powder and Local Products including a selection of locally produced wines.

Lanzarote Retreats has ten ecological properties and we’re very proud of our green credentials. All are off the national grid, giving guests the opportunity to enjoy a sustainable holiday, experiencing first-hand what it’s like living with solar panels, wind turbines and using the latest renewable energy technology, which makes the most of our wonderful Lanzarote weather. You’ll be surprised at the luxury of our accommodation.

The Location

Just 30 kilometres from the capital Arrecife, with its airport and ferry terminal, Finca de Arrieta remains an off-the-beaten-track location – the perfect setting for a relaxing, peaceful holiday in the Canarian countryside with the bonus of being near the beach.

The Village of Arrieta is within walking distance from the retreat but is via a farm track which is not ideal for buggies or walking in the dark, so we always recommend car hire (therefore a 2 minute drive).

This is a wonderful place to experience the true Lanzarote lifestyle. The village is an authentic Canarian fishing village with a beautiful sandy beach, where you’ll find good-value seafront tapas bars and restaurants, supermarkets, shops and a bakery.

Eco Credentials

All our eco properties except one – the Eco Fisherman’s Cottage – are situated on our rural retreat, Finca De Arrieta. The whole estate runs on a 48-volt system, the largest on Lanzarote, which efficiently powers the ten eco-friendly dwellings on-site, including our family home. For more detailed eco information, visit our Eco Q&A page.

Guests are free to help themselves to a daily supply of eggs from our free-range hens.

Additional guest facilities at the Finca

Children: Our dedicated kids’ area includes a play park, sunken trampoline, wooden "pirate" boat and our resident donkey Mollie. Children also love to visit our other animals, including our free range chickens and collecting eggs. We also have a table tennis table, learner surf boards, body boards, toys and beach toys, which guests are welcome to use.

Guest services, events and excursions at the finca

If you’re staying at Finca de Arrieta you can take advantage of various optional extras, some of which are free while others will attract a small charge. These can be arranged when booking or on arrival, but to avoid disappointment, please enquire about our added extras with as much notice as possible.

Supplementary services: cleaning, beach towel hire, babysitting, local produce grocery boxes and private transfers to and from the airport.

Excursions: We also organise evenings in local restaurants and day trips to La Graciosa, the smallest inhabited island in the Canaries. Visit our Days Out, Sports and Activities page for further information.

Excursions and activities with preferred partners: Our guests can benefit from discounts and special deals with a number of preferred partners, including aromatherapy massage treatments, surf and body board lessons road and mountain bike hire and luxury catamaran sailing trips. Spend a day on the ocean on a private yacht charter, explore the island on organised walking trips or try your hand at kayaking.  Visit our Days Out, Sports and Activities page for further information.

2. We want to provide a comfortable, safe environment for children of all ages. All properties have family-friendly features and we can provide a range of baby or toddler equipment on request. Click on Facilities for details of special family features and for additional items see our baby equipment hire.

3. Just minutes from a broad, sandy beach, with shallow water, our finca features a gated pool. We also have a table tennis table, learner surf boards, body boards, toys and beach toys, for guests' use.

4. We have a dedicated kids’ area, including a play park, sunken trampoline and our resident donkey Mollie. Children also love visiting our other animals, including our many chickens and collecting fresh eggs.

5. And, finally… we don’t just look after the kids – we take care of you too. We can organise excursions, sporting activities and pampering for parents – why not treat mum to a massage or let dad ride the waves!

There is plenty of space for guest parking within Finca de Arrieta.

Local Area, Facilities and Services

The area around Finca de Arrieta is stunningly beautiful and a chance for you to see the "real Lanzarote". The coastal, fishing village of Arrieta has been left unchanged and unspoilt and feels like stepping back in time. The village is a 10 minute walk from the Finca along a farm track and via an under-road tunnel, not ideally suitable for families with pushchairs or small children. The village is a 2 minute drive away. Due to the rural location of Finca de Arrieta, there is no street lighting at night.

There is a small sandy beach just 200 metres from the retreat and a main beach with beach bar, restaurant and toilets at the end of the village. There are a number of fantastic sea front fish restaurants, tapas bars and coffee shops. The village also has a  supermarket, a variety of shops, petrol station and diving school.

The mountain Village of Haria is just a short drive away. Known as "The Valley of a Thousand Palms", the town has a spectacular location and the views out to the ocean are breathtaking. Every Saturday morning, there is an artisan market, visit our Local Markets page for more information.

There are a number of golden sandy beaches on the way up north to the fishing village of Orzola. From here, there is a local ferry over to the neighboring island of La Graciosa. For more information on how to visit La Graciosa, visit our Days Out, Sports and Activities page.

Due to its rural location, there are some fantastic walking/cycling trails from the village along the coast, either north to the neighbouring village of Punta Mujeres or south to Mala village or Guatiza, home to the famous Cactus Garden.

The northerly region of Lanzarote is fantastic for walking, mountain biking, swimming, surfing, windsurfing, road cycling, hand and paragliding, fishing and bird watching.

There is also a gym in the nearby village of Arrieta.

Further afield

Within a short drive from Finca de Arrieta, you will be able to experience the beauty  and tranquility of northern Lanzarote.

The tropical bird park in Guinate with its wide variety of animals, birds and plants is very popular with families. The atmospheric caves and lava caverns of Jameos del Agua and Cuevas de los Verdes are both amazing and unique examples of the work of Cesar Manrique. The viewpoint at Mirador del Rio, looking out over the island of La Graciosa, is a perfect spot to get away from it all, be still and reflect.

“ It is a rare event that you return from a holiday and immediately start planning your return. But we have because we absolutely loved our Eco Yurt and, indeed, the whole of Finca de Arrieta. It is so wonderfully set up, with everything you need there, including a trampoline and play area for our three-year-old and a chill out area with guitars for our 12-year-old niece. We missed the paella night but everyone we met was raving about it. Nearby are some lovely restaurants and right across the road was a great beach and Michelle made sure we had enough boggie boards for everyone.
We could only stay two nights and we just did not want to leave. ”

- Victoria and Andrew, November 2012

“ We had a wonderful stay once again with Lanzarote Retreats, unbeatable for service and style. We stayed at the Eco Yurt for three days and then at the Beach House in Costa Teguise for four days, both completely different but brilliant. It was our first visit to the Eco retreat although we have stayed at several other of the properties, all amazing and different ! We would definitely stay at the retreat again though, so chilled out and relaxing. We must say a big thanks to Tila, Michelle and Sally for being so helpful and nothing was too much trouble, already thinking about our next visit.........
see you all soon ! ”

- SUE KENNY, November 2012

“ I stayed in the Eco Yurt with my two boys (4 and 8) in June and we all had a brilliant holiday. It was sunny, windy and most of all relaxing. The Yurt was lovely and I liked preparing and eating food outside on the deck. We were able to spend time by ourselves but also made friends. The communal area is great for adults to relax on the day bed and loungers, with the children in the nearby pool (which is more impressive than the pictures).

Lanzarote was such a surprise, better than I had imagined and I would love to go back to explore more of the coves, lagoons and villages. The Manrique attractions (Cactus Gardens, Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Rio) are great to visit. A world away from the usual tourist attractions.

I'd definitely come back and the children wished we could stay there for ever!

“ We spent our last week at the Eco Yurt and had a wonderful time, such a pleasant and relaxing way to spent the Holiday. Clean, comfort and aloth of space, nice people who help you anytime when needed. Would definitely come back!

Sally perfectly assist us with any questions!

Thank you so much!

Kind regards,

Nick & Esmeralda ”

- Nick & Esmeralda, September 2011

“ Thank you for a completely brilliant week. We had heard about the wonderful set-up at Eco Retreats and were not disappointed! The Eco Yurt had everything that we needed (and more), the pool area was great (loved the day bed!) and the chickens, turkey and play areas were a big hit. We were a little apprehensive about sleeping in the same 'room' as our two small boys but every night we all slept so well - a combination of very comfortable beds and the peace and quiet of the yurt. Thanks also for all the helpful advice and tips from Sally, Tila and Michelle. We've already recommended it to a number of friends! Fantastic! ”

- Jonathan & Emily Bailey, May 2011

“ 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Lots of little things that had clearly been thought through to make your life as easy as possible, whether it was the way the yurts had been laid out to give safe outdoor space for a toddler to play in, to the fact that child cutlery and crockery were available, to cling film and foil being on hand. Not exciting but kept hassle to an absolute minimum which was very much appreciated.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
The pool is solar heated so a bit too cold for swimming in the springtime (we were there mid March).

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?
Yes - the finca isn't on mains electricity so generates its own, and makes you aware of how to conserve water and electricity without it impacting negatively on your holiday. They promote local businesses (e.g. farmers providing welcome packs of food, car rental).

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Excellent - first big holiday with toddler, and she LOVED it! Very relaxing for us too.

Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

**** Some wonderful memories, I would not hesitate to recommend it to a friend

”

- Mahua Nandi , April 2011

“ A superb holiday on a lovely island. We drove 300 kms and did the 4-sites ticket plus the Manrique Foundation. Delightful and dramatic. The best bit was however the outdoor living in February and the comfort of the yurt. We wore short sleeves and shorts for much of the time, though needed layers for the evening. We had overnight rain and steady winds, but the yurt lets no more rain noise in than a house, and is nothing like a tent - very solid. We also walked part of the coast north and south from Arrieta. A very friendly, comfortable, unpretentious holiday. We also loved feeding the chickens, and eating their eggs! Our youngest daughter recommended the holiday, having loved it with their young children in the autumn - they've already booked for next October.

Mike & Joan Greenwood - February 2011 ”

- Mike & Joan Greenwood, February 2011

“ Had a great time at fince de Arrieta in the eco yurt at the end of Jan.
The weather wasnt great but the fact that we were staying in a luxurious yurt meant that we were quite happy to sit out the rain and just chill in lovely surroundings. ( Dont be fooled into thinking you are going camping, it was far better, not a single drip of rain in the yurt and it didnt even flap or budge an inch in windy conditions, solid as a rock!) If you are going in winter, do take layers for the more chilly evenings though. It hadnt rained the previous winter so i think we took the rain with us! Really comfortable and stylish and the company of the resident cats made it even more homely. Everyone was really helpful and friendly.
Great location: We only hired a car for one day, the finca is in such a convenient location that we found we didnt need a car for the whole time but it obviously depends on how much sight seeing you want to do. It is literally a 5 min walk to the beach (we took head torches with us for the stroll home after dark which was useful). The supermarket is only a 5-10 min walk and the village with loads of restaurants is only a 10 min walk, fantastic! We also borrowed a couple of bikes and cycled easily up to the green caves and Jameos del agua (both worth a look).
We bussed to to Haria to the sat market; but dont do what we did and get stranded because we forgot about the lack of taxis during the siesta time!! Thanks so much to Tila who came and picked us up, nothing was too much bother (even calling in at Ikea on the way back to the airport so i could stock up on solar lamps!!)
Highly recommend the day trip to La Graciosa, great value with the boat trip, guided walk a meal and time to have a swim too. The boat trip wasn't for the faint hearted as it was pretty choppy that day, but it was the highlight of the trip for us, great fun and an unforgetable experience!
Can't recommend this place enough, it was really special. ”

- Penny Marriott, February 2011

“ In October 2010 we spent 11 nights in the Eco Luxury Yurt. It was without a doubt the best family holiday we have had for a number of years. The accomadation was luxurious, private and incredibly relaxing and the retreat itself was a pleasure to spend time in and around. The location was exactly what we were looking for, quiet but incredibly friendly and local. My 5 year old daughter spend most of the time socializing with other children around the retreat and each evening put herself to bed having exhausted herself with play! The beach is amazingly private and beautiful and we spent many days sitting at one of the beach front restaurants, eating and drinking. Michelle and Tilla are wonderful hosts who go beyond the call of duty without hesitation to ensure your holiday is perfect. This is somewhere where we would recommend highly to anyone who wishes to try something a little more wholesome than your usual family holidays abroad, not least to those who wish a little romance to boot. ”

- Mr and Mrs Hennessey, October 2010

“ 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The rural location with an opportunity to see the landscape and vegetation.
The space, both our private area around our yurt and outside where the kids were free to play on the trampoline and meet the chickens and donkey.
The smallness of the resort and the uncrowded beach.
The morning bike ride into the village for bread.

2. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?
Yes

3. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
The right holiday for our family at this time.

Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

**** Some wonderful memories, I would not hesitate to recommend it to a friend

- Roo , October 2010

“ If you're one of those people who likes to get to their holiday destination and have information at their fingertips of what to do, where to go and how to do it, Finca De Arrieta is for you. If you like that information given to you on a roomy, poolside, day-bed with a cold beer in your hand while your host raids his own fridge for fresh olives and cheeses from the local market then book your tickets now!

The Finca, which is run by husband and wife team, Tila and Michelle and their three sons and daughter is a great destination whether you’re young, old, require peace and quiet or noisy, shared suppers. The thing about staying somewhere like this, is that you can decide what kind of holiday to make it.

We stayed in the Eco Yurt, which comfortably fitted my partner and I and our two rugrats (9 and 5 years). We went in August and had no issues with over-heating. It was spotless when we arrived, big double bed, candles, lamps, radio, bed side tables.
The kitchen and loo which were outside but in our own enclosed area were top notch. Big fluffy towels, boutique standard shower room, coffee, tea, milk, cold Cava. What’s not to like?
We had our own gate to the communal area and another gate out to the play area and chickens. Free eggs all holiday, scrambled, boiled, poached, omelette!

We spent a lot of time in the communal area. Communal dinners/Uno/ cocktail making/laptop use. The adults cooked and chatted while the kids put together little plays.
If we wanted a night of solitude, a glass of wine under the stars ad a good book, then we stayed in our own grounds.
There’s a play room for the kids, a donkey to ride, chickens to feed, a short walk to the beach, a pool, and lots of dads to play in the pool with the kids while the mums topped up their tans!
The owner’s brood kindly took our two off our hands and there was always something for them all to do. There’s a garage full of , bikes, spare cars, balls, bats whatever you want or didn’t know you wanted, it’s there.

Summary
If you want a holiday in your own room with no contact with anybody else then maybe this Finca ain’t for you. But if you want a warm and friendly holiday, with good food, good company and good times, then this really is your bag.
We had a look at the luxury accommodation and it’s top notch. Perfect for your own parties, outdoor bathing, sparkly under the stars. But if you’re a bit more strapped for cash, book a simpler yurt and do all that around the pool.
I would advise getting a car, or at least booking one with T&M for a day. There are good markets and grocery stores (and T&M will get you a delivery of fresh fruit, veg, cheese and wine right to your yurt) so cooking is a pleasure rather than a chore.
Although on holidays it really is each to their own, we ended up making some very good friends here. This isn’t just a business for Tila and Michelle, it’s a way of life. And when they open up their doors to you, you really do see hospitality at it’s best.
”

- Anna Louise, October 2010

“ It was a privilege to spend the last week of August/first week of September 2010 in such relaxing and beautiful surroundings. Initial worries that the yurt might turn out to be a gimmick were soon dispelled. The internet description of the Eco Yurt had not been overstated - it was luxurious, spacious, and we loved the privacy and the outdoor kitchen and bathroom in such a wonderful climate. We have recommended the Finca de Arrieta to all our friends and will certainly be back ourselves. ”

- Christiane und Mick Hutchins, September 2010

“ Had a great week in the Eco Yurt. Very comfortable and relaxing. This was our first time to Lanzarote and exceeded all our expectations. The volcanoes were fascinating and there were lovely quiet beaches to relax on or to walk along. The various tourist sites designed by Cesar Manrique were great to visit and not at all touristy. Finally we found some great restaurants and cafes to eat in. Michelle and Tilla do a great job making the experience in Lanzarote a great one. Thanks to you both for that. ”

- Alan and Fiona, June 2010

“ We had a great stay, the yurts were wonderfully peaceful spaces.thank you ”

- Beth Mitchell, May 2010

“ 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday? Watching the sunrise over the sea. 2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday? If you are staying in a Yurt with small children remember that you are all in one room and sleep may be somewhat limited! Hire a car. 3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment? Yes - eco water system, solar panels, solar night lights and wind turbines. 4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall? Good. Donkey, chickens and rabbits are all great features when travelling with a high-energy 2 year old. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall? **** Some wonderful memories, I would not hesitate to recommend it to a friend ”

- Rowan Bradford, February 2010

“ Eco Yurt - We stayed in the Eco Yurt over Xmas with our kids, 5 and 1. I can honestly say that it was the best family holiday we have had. The yurt was very spacious, even with a single bed and a cot bed added, and luxurious inside. The entire acccomodation was absolutely immaculate (when we arrived!). The private outdoor area was huge and provided plenty of space for the kids to play, although my 5 year old preferred to roam freely around the grounds of the Finca which was very safe and had loads to keep him occupied - trampoline, tree house, toys, animals and generally just loads of space to burn off lots of energy. I loved having the kitchen and bathroom facilities outdoors - being able to make breakfast and lunch in the fresh air is wonderful. The communal areas of the Finca are great from the beautiful day bed by the pool to the play room with ping pong table. Albeit a family friendly retreat, for those travelling without children, the pool area was very peacful most of the time and never overun with children. The Finca is very close to an excellent, child friendly beach with two nice resturants/bars and a play area. Arrieta itself is as far away from a tourist trap as you can imagine. It is very Canarian with enough Spanish/Tapas restaurants to keep us happy for the two weeks. The villages and beaches in the surrounding area are gorgeous and definately worth visiting. Michelle and Tila are the best hosts you could ask for. They gave us enough information to make sure we had the best time in Lanzarote. They organised outings with us which felt more like a day out with friends than an organised excursion and they put on a great Xmas dinner/party for all of their guests. In addition, we met lotss off other guests who were all lovely and very sociable. I could go on for ever on the reasons why this is a perfect holiday but to sum it up; this is the perfect compromise for families looking for a holiday which will keep the kids happy without being couped up in a huge souless complex with kids club and cabaret style entertainment. ”

- Debbie and Julian, January 2010

“ My husband and I and our 16 month old daughter stayed in the Eco Yurt in the Finca de Arrieta. We loved the farm complex and thought it had been beautifully and imaginatively designed and landscaped. Our yurt worked very well for us. The outdoor space, with secure latching gates at both entry ways, and wood decking was perfect for our daughter and meant we didn't have to worry about her too much. She also loved visiting the donkey and rabbits and feeding the chickens which we did everyday and sometimes twice a day. The yurt itself was really comfortable - none of the bad bits of camping and all of the best. It was very quiet and we slept well. We found the kitchen to be set up very well and had every implement, sauce pan, cutting board etc. that we could have asked for and the bathroom was lovely with a good supply of very hot water when we wanted it. Lastly, but not least, Michelle and Tila were great hosts. They made sure we had everything we needed and stayed in communication throughout the week that we were at the yurt. We asked questions that they must have been asked a thousand times but they were always enthusiastic and helpful. They also have charming kids and all of the people that we met who worked at the Finca seemed very friendly and had ready smiles. Many thanks for a great holiday. ”
