CACTUS GARDEN (Jardín de Cactus).
Michelle (LR founder) visited Jardín de Cactus last week. One of many visits, in fact too many to number over the years. All of us here at Lanzarote Retreats regular visit these gardens and with very good reasons, the Cactus Garden is a stunning place full of wonders, there really is nothing like it anywhere! If you visit us you really shouldn’t do so without taking to day trip to Jardín de Cactus – especially as it is only a 5 minute drive from Finca de Arrieta and 10 minutes from Costa Teguise and Punta Mujeres properties.
On the outskirts of Guatiza, situated at the very centre of the cactus fields, you will find Cesar Manriuqe’s last landscape monument, the Jardín de Cactus (the Cactus Garden). This huge garden is filled with specimens from all over the world, including the Canary Islands, America and Madagascar. Guatiza is a traditional farming village, which has vast plantations of prickly pears, it is part of the last cochineal production in the Canaries.
This former quarry has been transformed to a stunning oasis and Manrique’s eight-metre tall metal green cactus greets you at its entrance.
Once through the doors, prepare to be amazed at the 10,000 plants of 1,400 different species. You can also see inside the traditional “Gofio” flour mill a rare site now on Lanzarote
Everything carries Manrique’s signature, from the volcanic stone sculptures to the stylish restaurant and bar. Take your time wandering through the gardens terraces and stop for a coffee to absorb the stunning scenes of the cacti oasis.
There is also a souvenir shop and some of Cesar Manriques paintings are on exhibition in the entrance area.
The Jardín de Cactus is open daily from 10.00 to 17.30 hrs.
Entrance costs €5.50, Children 7 to 12 years €2.75
