INFORMATION ABOUT LANZAROTE

Lanzarote is the fourth largest of the Canary Islands. Since 1993 the island has been a declared UNESCO Biospheric Reserve, which has reinforced the commitment of the island to approach tourism in a sustainable & culturally significant manner.

From the spectacular volcanic landscape of the Timanfaya National Park, the intricate cave formations of Jameos Del Agua to the action-packed surfing beaches of Famara, Lanzarote has a depth & beauty which makes it a totally unique place to visit.

Created 35 million years ago, the island had early settlers dating back to 1100BC. The last volcanic eruption began in 1730 and lasted for a total of 2053 days, devastating the south of the island, creating 32 new volcanoes, destroying 11 villages & covering a quarter of the island’s surface with lava.

The year-round sunshine attracts visitors from all over the world throughout the year. The combination of traditional villages & amazing beaches, natural beauty & perfect climate brings many visitors back to the island year after year.

The island has no natural water source, all tap water is desalinated seawater. Despite the lack of rain or natural water, the earth is extremely fertile and agriculture still plays a role in island life. The well-established wine industry, centred around the La Geria region, produces delicious award-winning wine which is enjoyed by locals & tourists alike.

Cesar Manrique was born on the island in 1919. An artist, sculptor, ecologist & landscaper, his influence & style can be seen throughout the island. His works are varied and are often highly visible, such as the amazing wind sculptures found on many roundabouts. Both of his homes, Taro de Tahiche (Fundacion de Manrique) & Casa de Museo (Haria) are open for visitors. Through his strong influence, the island has primarily kept to its traditional, whitewashed houses & low rise buildings. It is difficult to imagine how Lanzarote would have developed without the role played by Manrique and his love & passion for the island is clear to see by all.
