ARRECIFE – A GUEST BLOG: more on the Arrecife Sands experience in a recent guest blog post HERE
Arrecife
Arrecife is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city full of culture, nightlife and history located just east of the centre of the island. Although Arrecife is our capital it is scaled to our island so even here the population is under 50,000 people meaning you can still feel the sense of community and friendliness not found in big cities.
The name derives from the Spanish for reef and refers to the volcanic rock formations that lie out to sea and protect the picturesque harbour. Arrecife was founded as a small fishing community back in the 15th Century but grew into becoming the island’s capital in 1852.
Today, it is equally well-known for its rich and diverse shopping experience, with traditional streets lined with boutiques, high-end retail outlets selling designer labels nad many great bargains
The prime shopping area is Calle Léon y Castillo, a pedestrian road lined with diverse retailers, tapas and bars.
Check out also the Centro Insular de Cultura El Almacén, a cultural centre filled with various exhibitions.
Arrecife also has its own beach, Playa del Reducto, with golden sand and tepid, tranquil waters. A lovely promenade runs all the way along the beachside. Everyday there is lots going on in the area, sports events such as cycling, volleyball, skateboarding, swim races and cultural events, parades, tapas fairs, nobody gets bored here!
A short walk along the beach will take you to the new Marina Lanzarote where yachts and pleasure craft moor to enjoy the entertainment, leisure facilities and shopping worthy of the finest new luxury marina in the Canaries
.
If you prefer something more traditional than 2 minutes from the marina is the lovely Charco de San Ginés, a lagoon of natural surrounded by beautiful white fishermen’s cottages. A charming, scenic area, which was remodelled by Canarian architect César Manrique, it is often referred to as the ‘Venice of the Atlantic’ and is a beautiful place to visit. Small boats are anchored on the turquoise waters, which make for pretty photographs. An attractive promenade lined with palm trees, small bridges, cafés, restaurants and souvenir shops surrounds this inlet.

JuanThis was the 2nd time staying at the Appt This time around it was a month long stay as we ended up spending the UK lockdown abroad (2 adults + 1 infant). This is a really pleasant Appt to stay in of you have an infant, as it is over one floor and there is plenty of space to move around in (our daughter had just started walking so she was walking all over the place). It’s right in front of the beach, which is a great location as you enjoy an hour or so at the beach for lunch, and then head back in for work (remotely). My wife & I both found it very enjoyable. The Appt has secure parking, which makes it very easy to come in and out. You definitely need a car in Lanzarote if you want to explore the Island (we ended up going all over the Island in the month+ we were there). Communication is also fast and efficient with the host. Was able to get mail delivered as well (ended up having to order some supplies for our infant daughter as they were not available locally) which was appreciated by us. All in all, we would definitely book again.
ChristineWe stayed at this lovely place for 1 week with another couple and 2 kids. It was great. The location is nice – directly in front of the beach. The apartment has everything you need, incl. 2 parking spots, baby chairs, baby beds etc. The communication was amazing and extraordinarily helpful. Happy to come back!
AnonymousWonderful apartment with loads of space, very convenient to walk to bars and restaurants and apartment very well kitted out. Wonderful views over Reducto Beach from floor to ceiling windows in bedroom and living area. Nice balcony to sit out on and “people watch” on the promenade below. We stayed during the Arrecife Carnival which was a great experience. Arrecife is a great destination for a holiday in Lanzarote if you want to do more than lay on a beach. We drove off to explore the island and visit the various sights during the day and then returned to the apartment in the late afternoon to enjoy the night life in the capital city. Great to have secure parking in the basement car park. Excellent service and communication throughout from Lanzarote Retreats.
