Find out more about Puerto Del Carmen in our Puerto Del Carmen travel guide.
Puerto Calero / Puerto del Carmen
Puerto Calero is only a few kilometres in distance from the bustling resort of Puerto del Carmen, but a world away in style and atmosphere. Home to some of the finest Lanzarote villas and hotels, as well as a good selection of bars and restaurants. Before 1983 Puerto Calero did not exist until it was dreamed up by the developer José Calero as an exclusive retreat to provide a luxury marina, residential development and golf course for the island of Lanzarote.
The Marina is a great place to wander, look at the fabulous boats and generally soak up a bit of the luxury atmosphere that permeates the whole place. You can certainly spend a few hours sat in one of the cafes or great range of restaurants that overlook the marina.
Puerto Calero is the base for a number of water based activities, such as the Catlanza catamaran trips, Submarine excursions and a variety of sport-fishing boats which allow you to try your skill at landing Marlin and Blue-fin Tuna in some of the best and most productive waters to be found. There are also dive schools operating out of the Marina who offer instruction and guided dives from beginner through to advanced levels. The array of shops in Puerto Calero is not vast, but you will find some very nice boutiques alongside souvenir shops which are more upmarket than in the other resorts of Lanzarote.
Puerto del Carmen first got going in the Sixties and since then it’s upped the tempo from its fishing village roots to become the most popular tourist destination in Lanzarote. The waterside promenade doubles up as the main strip – it’s packed with bars, clubs and restaurants, and it also looks out over a trio of beaches. You still get a bit of Puerto del Carmen’s former charm, though, as you’ll see from the authentic eating places in the old town.
Puerto del Carmen comes with 3 sandy beaches. The main one, running along the promenade, is Playa Grande with its sunloungers, umbrellas and gently shelving shoreline. Walk for about 10 minutes and you come to Playa Chica in the old town. It’s a bit quieter and secluded, and the diving centre makes it popular with snorkelers and scuba divers. And to the east is Playa Pocillos – a huge swathe of sand with windsurf-ready waves.

ChristineLas Palmitas is a stunning villa. So stylish and spotlessly clean. We have stayed in many villas on Lanzarote and we can honestly say Las Palmitas is our favourite one. The last part of the road to the villa is a gravel track but worth it for the quiet location and the view of the sea and the mountains. The photos of the villa and the interior don’t actually do the place justice. The management team are also excellent and respond to any enquiry really quickly. We highly recommend Las Palmitas and will definitely be back.
BradleyWe were 2 families of 4 that stayed in August 2022 and absolutely loved it. When we arrived at the Villa we were very pleased with what we saw. The Villa is spacious and clean with a pool plenty big enough for all of us. The outside dining area was perfect, the kitchen spacious and the bedrooms adequate for what we required, even though there was no air conditioning this was never a problem and the ceiling fans were enough to keep you cool. In the 2nd bedroom there is a plug in the cupboard that can be connected for an hour per day if you have trouble with hot-water and this worked perfectly. There was also a room with a table tennis table that got a reasonable amount of use. It is located in a quiet area half-way between Puerto Del Carmen and Puerto Calero. Both Del Carmen and Calero are walkable and it takes roughly 25 minutes along a coastal path (only done this during the day though, not sure it’s advisable of a nighttime given the uneven floor, reasonable drops to the ocean and lack of lighting). Taxis are easy to get from the Villa but you have to walk to the main road to collect them. This is along an unmade dusty road but only takes a few minutes. The driveway to the Villa is pretty long and made up of broken lava stones/dust but we managed in sandals & flip-flops no problem, white trainers take a bit of a bashing. Del Carmen is the livelier of the 2 with Calero being the the more upmarket of the 2. We ate in both and would have to say that Calero had the better restaurants. The Harbour Club, Azure and Portena were all very good. The Lanzarote retreats team were very friendly and quick to respond to all queries leading up to and during our stay and would 100% use their services again.
