How to have the ultimate Lanzarote holiday
How to have the ultimate Lanzarote holiday
Craving a holiday? Now more than at any time previously it feels like we deserve a break, the chance to sink our toes into warm sand, feel the sun on our faces, sit back and truly relax. With its year-round sunny climate, beautiful beaches and a tempting array of places to dine out, Lanzarote takes some beating for a very welcome change of scene.
Here are our top recommendations for planning the holiday we’ve all been waiting for…
Take an escorted wine tour
One of the most surprising beneficiaries of Lanzarote’s volcanic past is its bountiful vineyards, the vines planted into soil protected by a top layer of pićon or ash. A visit to the island wouldn’t be complete without a tour through the wine region of La Geria, stopping off at a few bodegas to sample the award-winning wines and tapas.
Marvel at the marine life
There are dozens of lovely beaches on Lanzarote but one of our favourites is our local spot, La Garita at Arrieta. Jump in the sea here and snorkel around the pier to see a marvellous variety of sea life. Look out for rainbow fish and parrotfish, urchins, anemone and crabs in the crystal-clear waters.
Escape to a treasure island
The UK’s Telegraph is touting La Graciosa as one of the top island alternatives for a tranquil post-lockdown holiday without the crowds. The tiny island was only officially recognised as the eighth Canary Island as recently as 2018. The story goes that La Graciosa inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. With no paved roads and fewer than 800 residents, the island’s beaches are empty and pristine. It’s also home to the largest protected marine area in Europe and boasts some of the best diving spots. Visit for a day trip to chill out on Las Conchas beach and enjoy lunch at Girasol. Ask us to book discounted ferry tickets for you.
Learn to surf with a pro
Lanzarote has some of the most reliable surf breaks in the world, making it the perfect place to catch a wave, whatever your level. Whether you’re wanting to polish your skills or are getting on a board for the first time, Lanzarote Retreats’ resident surf instructor, Josh Braddock, is on hand for private and group lessons. Book a VIP catamaran trip
The luxury adventure aboard Catlanza’s 56″ ‘Cat 6’ starts with a welcome glass of cava with the captain, followed by a scenic sail along the south coast from Puerto Calero to the legendary Papagayo beaches, accompanied by tasty local tapas served by the crew. Anchoring in a secluded cove, you can swim and snorkel, kayak and paddleboard (or simply relax) before a delicious lunch. The afternoon is rounded off with a lazy sail back to Puerto Calero.
Watch sunset at Mirador del Rio
Take a picnic and head to one of the island’s best vantage points for sunset, Mirador del Rio. One of Lanzarote-born artist César Manrique’s most iconic creations and located 400 metres high, the viewpoint looks out over El Río, the narrow stretch of the sea separating Lanzarote from La Graciosa and the Chinijo Islands. We can take care of the picnic for you, just ask.
Sleep like a champion at Palacio
A sustainable, self-catering holiday in Lanzarote needn’t mean compromising on luxury. Follow in the footsteps of celebrities including Formula One racing star Lance Stroll and check into Palacio. Set on the mountainside of Tabayesco and covering 10,000m2, the Palacio estate comprises Villa Palacio and three yurts as well as the Garden Bedroom.
With panoramic sea views out towards Arrieta and the Atlantic Ocean, a combined total of ten bedrooms, a private solar heated swimming pool and plunge pool, hot tub, pool table and table tennis, daily housekeeper and tropical gardens, Palacio offers an exceptional retreat in an idyllic location.
