Mácher
Mácher is a village on the Spanish island of Lanzarote, in the municipality of Tías. The village is situated on the southern island of Lanzarote, about 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) from the capital Arrecife, and 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) from the airport. It is characterized by a dispersed settlement on both sides of Arrecife–Yaiza–Playa Blanca road. It is located very close to Puerto del Carmen, about 2 miles from Puerto Calero.
The area was characterized by the cultivation of tomatoes and onions. Onions are grown north of the road, and tomatoes are south. More recently, most of its inhabitants work in tourism and services.
Among the natural attractions are the mountains of Guardilama (the third highest in Lanzarote) and Tinasoria mountain. The latter hosts paragliding and hang gliding, particularly the massif of Famara. The town’s patron is St. Peter, celebrated with an annual festival on June 29.
Macher has a small supermarket (Eurospar) which stocks a surprisingly wide range of goods, although many of the brands may not be instantly recognisable to most British consumers, however for a wider choice, the town of Tías is only a few minutes drive away, and the Centro Commercial Deiland at nearby Playa Honda, is also less than 15 minutes away in a car.
If you like fine dining, you will find in Macher two of the best restaurants on the island, La Tegala and La Cabaña de Macher.
In La Tegala the menu changes monthly and offers Canarian-Spanish cuisine, with special attention to the fresh seasonal produce, which comes directly from Lanzarote’s land and sea. The dining room offers panoramic sea and mountain views with a capacity of 40 diners, and two intimate, private rooms, in Canarian style, each with room for twelve. All the rooms are air-conditioned.
