School forests in Lanzarote

Students from Costa Teguise school have planted the first trees that will be part of the first forest of the island, an initiative they have called ‘Naturalmente’, which has the collaboration of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the program ‘Lanzarote Amable’.

The 16 species, some of them fruit trees, are located in one of the courtyards of the school and will be taken care of by the students themselves.

Councillor for the environment, Marcos Bergaz went to school where, accompanied by the Minister of Education of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Carmen Rosa Márquez, and by the councilman of Education of the City of Teguise, Francisco Javier Díaz, participated in the first plantation.

Marcos Bergaz said the forecast is to plant 365 trees in a year “with the aim of creating shady spaces and at the same time raise awareness among children about the care of our environment, involving teachers, parents and students”.

The director of the educational center, Daniel Sepúlveda, mentioned that the creation of this children’s forest is an activity in which the entire educational center participated and which will culminate with the implementation of a pond “our objective is to create a small ecosystem open to all species “.

The programme “Lanzarote Amable” will reach all the municipalities of the island and has the collaboration of colleges, institutes and day centres for senior citizens.

From Lanzarote Retreats we love this initiative and we hope it goes ahead in more schools of Lanzarote!
