LANZAROTE INFORMATION
Lanzarote is the fourth largest island in the Canary Islands archipelago. Since 1993, the island has been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which has strengthened the island’s commitment to address tourism in a sustainable and culturally significant way.
From the spectacular volcanic landscape of Timanfaya National Park, the intricate formations of Jameos Del Agua caves to Lanzarote’s action-packed beaches of Lanzarote have a depth and beauty that make it a totally unique place to visit.
Created 35 million years ago, the island had early settlers dating back to 1100BC. The last volcanic eruption began in 1730 and lasted a total of 2053 days, ravaging the south of the island, creating 32 new volcanoes, destroying 11 villages and covering a quarter of the island’s surface with lava.
The mild temperatures and the sun present throughout the year make Lanzarote one of the favorite destinations for travelers of different nationalities. The combination of traditional villages and incredible beaches, natural beauty and perfect climate attract many visitors to the island year after year.
Without a natural water source, running water is desalinated seawater. Despite the lack of rain or springs, the land is extremely fertile and agriculture still plays a significant role in the life of the island.
The well-established wine industry, mainly located in La Geria, produces delicious wines that are enjoyed by both locals and visitors in a respectful manner.
César Manrique (24 April 1919 – September 25, 1992). He is an artist, sculptor, environmentalist and landscaper, his influence and style can be seen throughout the island. His works are varied and often very visible, such as the incredible “Wind Toys” found in many roundabouts. Its two houses, Taro de Tahiche (Foundation of Manrique) and House of Museum (Haría) are open to visitors. Through its strong influence, the island has managed to maintain the main features of traditional architecture: white houses and low-rise buildings. It is difficult to imagine how Lanzarote would have developed without the role that Manrique played and his love and passion for the island is evident to all. Lanzarote enjoys a fairly quiet pace of life, giving visitors the opportunity to explore, discover and relax during their stay.
