History

Puerto del Carmen originally began as a small fishing village, just like the rest of the villages around the island of Lanzarote. The transformation into a tourist hotspot started in the 1960s and 70s, driven by Lanzarote’s appeal to sun-seekers and water sports enthusiasts (mainly Windsurfers and Kitesurfers).

What to do in Puerto del Carmen?

The main attraction in Puerto del Carmen is the beaches, the shopping centre and its nightlife. 

This golden sandy beach is the main attraction in Puerto del Carmen. It’s perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports like parasailing. We highly recommend visiting Playa Chica for snorkelling/diving, just a ong from Playa Grande.

The ‘Old Town’ is more quaint and still has some original cobbled streets, with its small fishing harbour. There are some lovely seafood restaurants located in this area.

Shopping! There are two main locations for shopping, either the promenade: Avenida de Las Playas or alternatively Biosfera Commercial Centre (with parking). 

The Open Air Starlight Cinema is also located in Biosfera, perfect as a date night or take the family! 

Puerto del Carmen boasts a lively nightlife scene with bars, clubs, and entertainment venues along the Avenida de las Playas.

Where to eat in Puerto del Carmen?

Mardeleva (Old Town) – a great option for lunch or dinner with stunning ocean views! Famous for its fish platter and great sea food.

Cangrejo Rojo (Old Town) – perfect for lunch or dinner. They offer a range of food including meat dishes, seafood and more! 

Antonio’s – another option for lunch or dinner, located at the entrance of Puerto del Carmen and stunning food/service!

There is also a large variety of restaurants to choose from located along the promenade of Avenida Las Playas
